What is meant by 'worldview', according to the perspective of Islam, is the vision of reality and truth that appears before our minds eye revealing what existence is all about. 

The worldview of Islam then is the Islamic vision of reality and truth, which is a metaphysical survey of the visible as well as the invisible worlds including the perspective of life as a whole. It is a restatement and re-articulation of the fundamental elements that constitute the projection of the world of existence in its totality.

These include the conception of the nature of God, the prophet, the concept of religion, revelation, the nature of man, of happiness, the nature of the world, concepts of knowledge, science, language, and education. Each of these elements is brought together in a relation that constitutes a unity (tawhid). All these are discussed against the backdrop of the modern and post-modern challenges posed by the forces of secularisation as a philosophical programme. To address this external challenge faced by the Muslims, the notions of progress, change, and development are put under scrutiny.

 Apart from this, the Muslim community suffers from various internal crises. These internal crises come basically in the form of the loss of adab, which is a result of confusion and error in knowledge, and leading to the rise of false leaders in various fields and domains of life which in turn promote and perpetuate the previous two, forming a vicious circle.

​WISE is one small initiative to break this vicious circle and reinstitute the proper understanding of Islam through its basic conceptual framework projecting its worldview, in men and women of intelligence, integrity and responsibility. It is hoped that this initial step would lead to subsequent engagements that would continue to further strengthen the understanding and fellowship.

The origins of WISE could be traced back to the days ISTAC during the directorship of Prof. Dr. Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas. Then Research Fellows and Junior Research Fellows of ISTAC were tasked to concentrate their attention and study specific themes with regards to the fundamental elements constituting the worldview of Islam, develop and deliver courses out of it. From there, many "proto" WISEs were conducted formally and informally at various institutions. With continuous advice and guidance from Prof. Wan Mohd Nor Wan Daud, they and their colleagues became the first group of WISE instructors. 

This continued until around 2010 where several individuals and groups emerged and converged around the realisation of the importance of an intellectually sound and spiritually rigorous response to the challenges facing the Muslims at that time.

The Assembly of Young Intellectuals (HAKIM) as they called themselves at that time and an informal fraternity of entrepreneurs who called themselves curiously the Curiosity Institute were at the forefront of this endeavour.

Thus in 2011, Siri Wacana Pandangan Alam Islam (WISE) was offered for the first time to the general public and has attracted around 80 participants to convene in Saturday mornings at the Seminar Hall of Institut Integriti Malaysia to learn about the worldview of Islam. ​

The first few instalments of WISE were quite ambitious. It consists of three semester courses running throughout the year with brief semester breaks. Many of the first batch of participants volunteered themselves a organisers of subsequent WISE and WISE related programs.

At the same time the Centre for Advanced Studies on Islam, Science and Civilisation (CASIS, now RZS-CASIS) were established in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Kuala Lumpur, and quite a number of the early WISE participants enrolled themselves as graduate students at CASIS, UTM.

With each round, WISE continued to improve and grow. Eventually, the extent and rigour of the early WISE programs were reconfigured into a course of eight modules that genuinely encapsulates the major discussions concerning the worldview of Islam. The remaining modules were relegated to WISE Focus which at this time still informal and offered only based on needs and case-by-case only, and WISE-2 which pilot program was only offered recently in 2022. 

In 2014, with the impetus from and collaboration with CASIS, WISE Summer School was offered for the first time. WISE Summer School is WISE condensed into a one-week intensive program where participants have to stay and submerge themselves in the totality of the "WISE experience". 

In December 2016, as a result of initiatives by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wan Suhaimi Wan Abdullah and Prof. Dr. Muhammad Zainiy Uthman, through the initiatives of Yasri Shamsudin Khan of SMFR, WISE Sweden was organised for the first time. In early 2017, WISE Egypt was also offered for the first time with the initiatives of a Malaysian Students Group there with the support of Education Malaysia Egypt.

Since the pandemic in 2020, WISE like many other programs of this nature has gone online. This has introduced new dynamics for WISE as it manoeuvre through the changes of circumstances. 

With the establishment of Ta'dib Institute, WISE is to be integrated as one of its main programs.

The year 2021 marks 10 years after the first WISE was offered in 2011. Since its inception WISE has grown and expanded both in scope and reach, academically as well as organisationally. A steady stream of graduates of RZS-CASIS of which majority are WISE alumni are now contributing to its running both academically as well as administratively. The global pandemic has resulted in a major shift in its operation and a rethinking of its role for the future.

While RZS-CASIS provides a solid platform for a rigorous academic training at the same time grounding one's selves in the worldview of Islam, WISE is more open and flexible in its scope and outreach. Academic research is not meant for everyone nor does our society require everyone to be academics. Good education, however, is necessary for each Muslim individual young and old. For this reason, WISE modules are designed with two mutually complementary outcomes in mind: professorial and professional. Those with academic inclination and aptitude will naturally gravitate towards RZS-CASIS as a platform for the progression of their intellectual journey. Those with a more entrepreneurial bent will gravitate towards something else. Some, of course, are bestowed with the capacity to play both roles simultaneously.

One of the direct result of WISE in the early days is the establishment of Akademi Jawi Malaysia by Muhammad Syukri Rosli, an alumnus of the first iteration of WISE in 2011. Inspired by the concept of Islamic languages as defined by Prof. al-Attas, Syukri went on to study Raja Ali Haji's "Kitab Pengetahuan Bahasa" for his masters degree at RZS-CASIS at the same time established publishing and printing house dedicated for the reintroduction, invigoration and education of Jawi literary treasures in a sustainable business model. Formerly known as Klasika Media, this house has grown into a one-stop centre of reference for everything relating to Jawi, the Akademi Jawi Malaysia, which has benefitted many academics, researchers, policy makers, as well as enthusiasts

The recent pandemic is a wake-up call for all of us. It is an opportunity for us to reflect upon the direction of our education as a whole, especially higher education. While most are concerned about job markets and economic growth, we believe there are far more fundamental issues that are yet to be settled that could bring about clarity and understanding to things as they are as a whole. Very few institutions if there is any at all are fully committed to addressing them in a serious and intellectually and spiritually satisfying manner.

WISE being the flagship program of Ta'dib International with close collaboration with RZS-CASIS, and HAKIM is in need for an upgrade in terms of its organisation and implementation, which is part of the Ta'dib Institute Initiative.
